Many people may find it hard to believe that Dassler brothers’ story began when they started making shoes in their mother’s rather small laundry. Having just returned from the World War I, Adolf Dassler and Rudolf Dassler turned their venture in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria into Dassler Brother Shoes Factory before long.

Jesse Owens wore shoes made by Dassler brothers while earning 4 medals in the ‘36 Olympic Games, and it changed the destiny of the company as it was receiving order letters from around the world. Before the World War II erupted, the company had managed to reach a sale figure of 200.000 pairs per annum.

After a couple of years rift, two brothers resorted to founding their own companies. Rudolf Dassler called his RuDa, which later evolved into Puma; while Adolf Dassler named his company adidas. adidas was registered in 1949 and patented 3-Stripes in the same year. Thus began the story of one of the most successful sportswear brands.

adidas quickly started leading competitive footwear race as Adi Dassler frequently visited athletes, listening tp their needs and designing the exact shoes for their demands. In the year 1970, adidas began supplying balls for FIFA World Cup™, promoting its reputation.

When the Olympic Games were back in Germany for the 1972 Munich Games, adidas made yet another leap with the new Trefoil logo, symbolising athletic performance. Trefoil is now featured on Originals collection, which mostly highlights retro and old school styles.

In 1997, adidas bought Salomon Group, which specialised in winter-wear, and named it adidas-Salomon AG. In 2003 Stella McCartney launched a joint-venture with adidas. 2005 saw the Salomon Group being sold to Finnish Amer Sports while 2006 was the year adidas took over Reebok for USD 3.8 billion.

Still headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, Germany, adidas sponsors many prestigious leagues, clubs, players, associations, and organisations today. The company also leads collaborations with such iconic names as Kanye West, Rita Ora, Pharrell Williams, Yohji Yamamoto, Chuck D, Jeremy Scoott as well as a lifetime contract with David Beckham.

Having bought Runtastic in August 2015, building the first shoe with a microprocessor in 2005, and launching Better Place Program in 2007, adidas seems to be in the perfect track for sustainability, innovation, performance and style as the late Adolf Dassler would have wished for…
